ABSTRACT

Consensus seminar on health monitoring

Health monitoring of animals used in research is attracting ever greater attention and is now a major part of the work of all scientists. New micro-organisms are continually being added to the list of those thought to be of importance. Often the organisms concerned are unknown to the majority of workers and their significance has not been determined fully.
Helicobacter species is a good example of such an organism. During this seminar it is hoped to explore the necessity of searching for the organism and what can be done when it is present in a colony. Perhaps the question is: Is it really important?
FELASA has now produced new recommendations for health monitoring of laboratory animals. The document has implications for the whole membership of Scand-LAS. The new recommendations are thought-provoking, because they cover new organisms and also the way that health monitoring programmes are designed. The latest report requires much more interpretation than previously. During this session the relevance to Scand-LAS member countries will be assessed.
