Ingebjørg O. Sævareid
Ingebjørg Sævareid graduated as an aqua medicine biologist from the University of Bergen. She then worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 10 years, within research and development of fish vaccines. She also monitored field trials and the use of drugs in the fish farming industry. For a time she was leader of the Fish Health Committee of Legemiddelindustrien (LMI), the branch organisation for pharmaceuticals in Norway. She is now Scientific Officer for Fish Health in Salmon Group, a network of small and medium-sized fish farmers. Through her work she is actively engaged in improving conditions for fish in the farming industry. Norway has long fishing traditions, but aquaculture is still a relatively young industry. Fish are farm animals in the same way as the traditional agricultural species, with the same rights. With our current knowledge of the cognitive abilities and welfare needs of fish, the time is ripe to discuss today's production systems. Through her work for Norecopa, Ingebjørg Sævareid hopes to increase awareness of animal rights in both fish research and industrial production.
