This policy statement lists examples of experiments which are to be considered representative of 5 categories of invasiveness. The categories are:
- Most invertebrates or live isolates
- Little or no discomfort or stress
- Minor stress or pain of short duration
- Moderate to severe distress or discomfort
- Severe pain near, at, or above the pain tolerance threshold of unanesthetized conscious animals
