Published in the British Journal of Cancer in 2010.

Focusing on animal welfare, the paper presents recommendations on all aspects of cancer research, including: study design, statistics and pilot studies; choice of tumour models (e.g. genetically engineered, orthotopic and metastatic); therapy (including drugs and radiation); imaging (covering techniques, anaesthesia and restraint); humane endpoints (including tumour burden and site; and publication of best practice.

The paper can be accessed here.

AAALAC International cites these guidelines as one of its reference resources (with a caveat), with the caveat that AAALAC Council recommends the use of performance-based clinical signs signalling the need for immediate intervention listed in Box 5 on page 1571, in lieu of a more prescriptive engineering standard. The report can be downloaded from AAALAC as a pdf file.
