Description: | This program educates students about the importance of handling laboratory animals with care, minimizing variables that could skew research data, and understanding federal research animal regulations. Students learn not only through textbooks, but also at the College's Lenfest Animal Health Center, through field trips to shelters, and in externships/practicums at approved research facilities. Students also receive training in non-human primate and non-primate laboratory animals, research methodologies, nutrition, ethics, and laboratory management. |

Prerequisites: |
All full and part-time students are required to demonstrate proof of medical insurance, a tetanus booster within the last ten (10) years, and a tuberculosis test within one (1) year to participate in animal laboratories, veterinary clinic rotations, and career externship. Rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis immunization is highly recommended. Students are required to either show proof of rabies immunization or sign a declination form. Students must be able to lift 50 pounds and be able to demonstrate the physical capabilities to work closely and safely with animals of all sizes. Students with limitations to movement, sight or hearing may find it difficult to meet all course requirements. For the health and safety of students appropriate attire will be addressed in all classes with laboratories. |

Students will apply the principles of proper management and husbandry, breeding and reproduction, proper nutrition, and animal behavior of the variety of species used in life science research. Students will explain current standards of regulatory oversight and veterinary care for research animals, medical and surgical equipment and practices for research endeavors, and describe techniques for assisting with these as directed by supervisors and managers. Students will explain the use, maintenance and assessment of animal models and in vitro cellular and tissue models; control of experimental research variables and endpoints; appropriate use of data gathering instruments; and data-based decision making. Students will communicate effectively in both written and oral forms, including presentations, in a manner appropriate for the laboratory animal care field. Students will demonstrate decision-making, personal conduct and teamwork consistent with the professional standards of the laboratory animal care field. Students will recognize and reflect on credible information resources in the laboratory animal field including peer reviewed publications, professional organizations’ continuing education offerings, and regulatory documents. |
