| Description: | Course includes the SPCAL Theoretical Online Course (www.spcal.pt) and a practical course ran at the Champalimaud Foundation. Practical course includes audiovisual practical sessions on husbandry, colony management, handling+restraint and administration/collection techniques and then practical hands-on sessions on these subjects. For the administration/collection techniques, only the more common techniques are performed in live animals and all these animals are deeply anaesthetised and are sacrificed prior to recovery. For these sessions, we use surplus animals (e.g. wild-type from genotyping) from our colonies, which were candidates to euthanasia. We keep on using live animals because we want the researchers to be prepared for "real life". We feel that alternative models are good as a first approach, but they cannot mimic 100% real animals and we don't want to have researchers performing the techniques for the first time in conscious animals at the time of the experiments. |
