Description: | Since 2004, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences has offered a course in Laboratory Animal Sciences (LAS) for scientists (category C). This course meets the requirements for recognition as ‘Cat C Animal Experiment Leader’ as defined by the royal decree of 13 September 2004. This royal decree regulates the education and training of persons performing or participating in animal experiments, and those responsible for the care of laboratory animals. Moreover this LAS course was the first in Belgium to be accredited by FELASA (the Federation of Laboratory Animal Science Associations). This means that the quality of the programme is internationally recognised and is constantly monitored and evaluated. The successful completion of the course leads to a certificate from the University of Antwerp, via which you are more easily allowed to conduct laboratory animal experiments in countries other than the one in which you trained, i.e. Belgium. |

Details on the topic or technology covered: |
The course covers the various topics that are mentioned in the royal decree of 13 September 2004, in-depth knowledge of which is required for recognition as an experiment leader. The course also covers the recommendations of FELASA as published in "Laboratory Animals 36(4): 373-377, 2002". A section of the training covers general topics such as the history, law and ethics of animal experimentation, experimental set-up, application procedure. Another section of the course covers practical topics such as nutrition, housing and anaesthesia. The final section deals with the definition, validation, use and limitations of animal models. As such, relevant models for human diseases (toxicological, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and oncological, etc.) are also discussed. During the practical sessions, you will be trained to handle, restrain and perform basic experimental procedures with rodent laboratory animals and zebrafish. Wherever possible, alternative methods will be suggested. |
