Description: |
The Virtual Physiology programs are very valuable and highly accepted alternatives to animal labs in students’ education, particularly promoting critical thinking and analytical skills. They offer realistically appearing, fully equipped laboratories on the computer screen for free experimentation almost like in the real world. All stimulation and recording devices are freely adjustable. Mathematical algorithms guarantee for the appropriate reactions of the preparations, also considering their physiological diversity.
The Virtual Physiology series currently includes five laboratories featuring classical physiology and pharmacology experiments previously performed, e.g., with isolated hearts and smooth muscle of rats (SimHeart and SimVessel) and frog’s skeletal muscles and peripheral nerves (SimMuscle and SimNerv), accomplished by virtual voltage- and current-clamp laboratories (SimNeuron) for nowadays basic neurophysiology experiments. Our Virtual Physiology labs are widely accepted as fully satisfactory substitutes of the real experiments with animal tissue - also because of their significant didactic advantages. The students can do the experiments without negative emotions from the killing of animals and also without fear of destroying the preparation. They can make mistakes and can learn from their mistakes repeating the experiments with more appropriate settings. They are not limited by the time of a practical course but can also do the experiments on their computers at home. Almost ten thousand fully functioning demo versions with only minor restrictions, running for two months, have until now been downloaded for free. More than 100 universities and high schools have so far purchased more than 300 Virtual Physiology labs for regular use in students’ courses, thereby probably saving the lives of thousands of animals. Detailed information, also for downloads, is given on the website www.virtual-physiologie.com. For further questions, please contact Hans Braun (braun@staff.uni-marburg.de). |
