Description: Communication between excitable cells in the nervous system is based on changes of the membrane potential of these cells. The viodeo film explains the mechanism underlying these changes with the use of animation. The changes in membrane potential are the result of changes in ionic currents. The ionic currents of the resting cell are determined by the specific conductances and driving forces for each ion. Changes in either conductance or driving force lead to departures from the resting membrane potential. Conductance is controlled by the opening and closing of ionic channels, which in the living brain, can be regulated by chemical messengers as well as by the membrane potential itself. In addition to the video film there is a computer simulation, that permits to experiment with ionic currents, constituing the action potential.
