Shoot is a prototype of a virtual reality simulation where students can practice stunning of animals in an emergency situation. Animal Welfare regulations have changed in recent years. Animals are killed on the farm rather than being transported with injuries to a slaughterhouse. Shoot aims to prepare students for these situations. By using "Shoot" as a virtual reality simulation, students are put in a stressed, farm-like environment where a sick cow has to be stunned. Students are trained to think of their own safety, to work according to animal welfare regulations and to stun the animal correctly. The student wears a head-mounted display during the simulation. A Wii controller makes it possible to pick up objects and then stun the animal. This simulation is currently under development.
Comments & References: Suitable for two students or one teacher and one student working together. One student uses "Shoot" and the other influences the stress factors such as a difficult farmer or an aggressive animal. Please contact Dr. Lipman (l.j.a.lipman@uu.nl) for more information on this simulation.
