This Teaching and Learning Resource Pack (TLRP) aims to develop transferable skills in students and to increase understanding of the processes in cells which can be targets for drug action, specially illustrated by G-protein coupled receptors.   After utilising material prepared from the TLRP, students should have gained increased: experience of working in teams and of solving problems; knowledge and understanding of the variety of molecular mechanisms for signalling which cells use and how drugs may work by these mechanisms; knowledge and understanding of signal transduction by G-protein coupling and how drugs can act via this mechanism.   Problem based learning scenario: "A gasp for air": Student teams would be provided with a two page scenario that is divided into two sections.   The first section describes the symptoms and drug treatment of a case of asthma.   The second section gives an account of research results that a student could obtain with salbutamol, and includes some data.   Students could work in teams with a member of staff as facilitator.   In session 1 they would identify cues, link them together and determine some learning objectives.   The students would use the two CAL packages and other resources to find information.   In session 2 the students would have a structured discussion to explain the cues and the scenario.   It is likely that a team would consist of 4 to 6 students and would require two 1 hour sessions with a facilitator.   In addition, students would need to spend 2 to 3 hours using the CAL packages and other resources.   The workbook consists of 6 separate sets of tasks.   For task 1, students have to develop a glossary of terms.   For tasks 2 to 6, students have to complete sentences, draw diagrams and write descriptions.   The intention is that students would use the two CAL packages to repond to the tasks, so they need to grasp concepts and be able to explain them in their own words.   Students could be provided with all 6 tasks or any combination and could work in small teams or individually.   They would need to spend 3-4 hours using the CAL packages and completing the tasks.   The outcomes could be assessed by staff or student peers.
