Fin clipping in fish

Various types of fin clipping have been the subject of research. Studies on the effects of total or partial removal of different fin types have been conducted on many different species.

Norecopa's secretary has edited a number of essays written by participants on courses in laboratory animal science for researchers. These essays have not been quality-controlled, nor is the content necessarily endorsed by Norecopa. These essays are presented here as an aid to further discussions on the subjects.

Individual identification methods are commonly used in fish research, including studies on size of stocks, growth rates, migration patterns, behaviour and genetics. In aquaculture, such methods can be used to calculate growth rates and to aid identification of fish that have escaped. Fin clipping has often been used in breeding programs. Since these programs employ large numbers of fish and are carried out over a long period, it is possible to observe any effects on growth and survival as an effect of fin clipping. Various types of fin clipping have been the subject of research. Studies on the effects of total or partial removal of different fin types have been conducted on many different species.
