| Description: | Integral to the justification of the use of animals in research are the 3Rs Principles. The 3Rs were discussed in the ALAT Training Manual, so you should be familiar with the basic concepts of replacement, reduction, and refinement. While this sounds simple, applying these principles to everyday situations can be complex. These principles are: •Replacement: Can animals be replaced by nonanimal alternatives or lower sentient species without interfering with the objectives of the study? •Reduction: Can fewer animals be used without altering the validity of the study data? •Refinement: Can the procedures used in the study be refined to lessen pain and distress or minimize the number of potentially painful procedures that the animals must undergo during the study? Through the establishment of regulatory mandates, society has determined that we must apply these principles in order to meet our ethical obligations when using animals in research. |
