The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) developed recommendations (originally known as the Vancouver style) to review best practice and ethical standards in the conduct and reporting of research and other material published in medical journals, and to help authors, editors, and others involved in peer review and biomedical publishing create and distribute accurate, clear, unbiased medical journal articles.
The recommendations state that 'when reporting experiments on animals, authors should indicate whether institutional and national standards for the care and use of laboratory animals were followed. Further guidance on animal research ethics is available from the International Association of Veterinary Editors Consensus Author Guidelines on Animal Ethics and Welfare.'
