| Description: | Give the participants insight in how to conduct valuable and high-quality research projects with the pig as research model. There will be lectures on legislation and how to apply for permission to perform animal experiments. Apart from gaining the knowledge of do’s and don’ts within the field, the course participants will have time to make a draft for a licence application themselves and be introduced to basic concepts such as severity assessment and humane endpoints. A paramount focus will be on anesthesia and analgesia of the pig, in order for the participants to be able to draft and perform a suitable anesthesia and analgesia protocol, and make thorough decisions on every aspect from pre-anesthetic agent to the postoperative pain relieve management and surveillance. This will be followed by a day of practical exercises. Here, the participants will have hands-on experience anesthetizing pigs and performing general surgical procedures. Participants will be taught in the concept of ARRIVE-guidelines, the 3Rs, systematic review procedures as well as pitfalls when evaluating research results in swine and possible confounders to research results to consider. The aim here is to focus on the translational value. There will also be a brief touch upon precautions to avoid zoonoses and for finalization of the course there will be a one-hour test. |
