This course is aimed at research workers performing experiments on animals. The course complies with the requirements for theoretical training in Section 24 and Appendix E of the Test Animal Regulations and the requirements for theoretical training in the EU A and B Directives. Organized 3-day practice in experimental animals is approved as part of the course.
The course consists of the following:
- Self-study: E-learning 29 October – 7 November, 2018
The e-learning can be taken whenever it suits you, but it is highly recommended to have been through all the obligatory e-learning before 7 November.
-Lectures/ group work/assignments from lunch Wednesday 7 November to lunch Friday 9 November, 2018.
-Minimum 21 hours of practical training
-Online multiple choice exam
-Written assignment: make an application for performance of an animal experiment (FOTS application)
The obligatory lectures/group work/ assignment are based on learning outcomes from the e-learning modules.
It is obligatory for the course participants to go through the e-learning modules before attending the course at Campus Adamstuen, NMBU.
The practical training, written assignment and the online multiple choice exam must be completed before the course is approved.

Aims and objectives
The Aims are to teach the participants the basics of laboratory animal science, which includes biology, handling, anesthesia/analgesia, euthanasia, health monitoring, infections, design of studies, ethics, humane endpoints etc.
The participants will have to undertake a minimum of 21 hours of practical training on a relevant animal species, supervised by a named Veterinary Surgeon, working with laboratory animals. Each participant is personally responsible for finding a suitable supervisor that is willing to provide the obligatory minimum of 21 hours training. If necessary, it is possible to arrange for practical training at NMBU, campus Adamstuen. Guidelines for the training will be provided after the registration deadline.
