The programme was initiated in 2004 by Vera Baumans, former professor of
Laboratory Animal Science at KI and the maximum number of residents is 7. Training
is individually tailored and supervised by four Swedish ECLAM Diplomates, one
professor in Comparative Medicine and KI’s chief veterinarian. To join the
programme, a permanent position as a veterinarian at one of the collaborating
institutes is required.
The Swedish programme comprises a four-year period of training. The objective is to
provide the trainees with further education and training including both general and
basic knowledge in the various fields of laboratory animal medicine and, in addition,
the opportunity to become specialists in one of the disciplines relevant to laboratory
The programme consists of two parts:
A residency training programme of at least 2 years, starting with a basic course on
laboratory animal science and 6-8 modules (total: 220 hours) which all cover the
major aspects of laboratory animal medicine. This is followed by a period of daily
practice at one of the participating institutions.
Research training in one of the fields of laboratory animal medicine at one of the
participating institutions. Apart from improving the participant’s critical thinking and
research skills when approaching specific problems, the objective of this work is also
