Delivered Online - Training on Experimental Animal Use, Regulations and Procedures (TEARAP) course is a professional certificate programme (5 ECTS credits) designed to achieve the objectives of training personnel involved in the use of animals for experimental research in line with the requirements of Article 23 of Directive 2010/63/EU. This fully online programme is recognised by HPRA (Health Products Regulatory Authority) as an appropriate accredited scientific animal training course.
The course requires completion of two core units (Consisting of nine e-Lectures each) and one elective unit. (Consisting of one e-Lecture on Rodents or Farm Animals). In addition to the e-Lectures there are additional reading materials included in the “Supplementary Learning materials” folder, which you must also review. Following completion of listening to e-Lectures and reviewing the contents in the “Supplementary Learning materials” section, you will be assessed (online exam) for the award of TEARAP certificate.

The programme is designed to be completed over the course of one month.
Applicants are required to have a degree with the appropriate background in the biological sciences
Applicants will require a computer with a webcam and reliable high-speed broadband Internet access as well as an intermediate level of IT skills (be able to browse the Internet, download files, use email, complete online forms, use software such as MS Excel and Word).

Animal welfare and responsibilities of researchers

Unit 1 (Core Unit)

eLecture 1.2: Ethics committee and ethical approval.
eLecture 1.3: Regulatory requirements.
eLecture 1.4: Application process for establishment / project / individual authorisation.
eLecture 1.5: Care and compliance
eLecture 1.6: Training and competency requirements.
eLecture 1.7: Understanding biological statistics.
eLecture 1.8: Study and experimental design.
eLecture 1.9: Commonly used software for statistical analysis.
Unit 2 (Core Unit)
eLecture 2.1: Openness and transparency in animal research and the role of research integrity.
eLecture 2.2: The 5 R's - PART 1 of 2, The 5 R's - PART 2 of 2.
eLecture 2.3: Categories of experimental procedures (severity banding).
eLecture 2.4: Working with transgenic animals.
eLecture 2.5: Monitoring of animal health and welfare.
eLecture 2.6: Routine procedures.
eLecture 2.7: Euthanasia.
eLecture 2.8: Anaesthesia, analgesia and aseptic surgery.
eLecture 2.9: Training responsibility.

On successful completion of this course, the participant should have a clear understanding of responsibilities and regulatory requirements when undertaking animal studies for teaching or research purposes.
