Description: The purpose of this lab activity is to help the student to learn the anatomy of a crayfish. It should also give a better understanding of the anatomy of invertebrate animals in general. Crayfish Dissection consists of clear colour photos of various stages of dissection of a preserved crayfish, where structures and organs are named. Materials needed for the lab activity: Preserved Crayfish; Dissection Pan; Dissection kit; Scalpel; Forceps; Scissors; Dissecting Pins; Probes. Table of Contents: I Setup for the Dissection; II External Anatomy: Head, Cephalothorax, Abdomen, Rostrum, Carapce, Compound Eyes, Antennules, Antennae, Walking Legs, Cheliped, Swimmerets, Telson, Uropod, Mouth; III Respiratory System: Gills; IV Muscle System: Extensor, Flexor; V Nervous System: Brain; VI Circulatory System: Heart; VII Digestive and Excretory System: Esophagus, Stomach, Intestine, Anus, Green Gland; VIII Male Anatomy: Testes; IX Female Anatomy: Ovaries; X Cleanup: Disposal of crayfish, Clean equipment. After completing the dissection, the student should be able to: 1 Correctly identify the locations involved in the dissection procedures; 2 Correctly identify the locations of the major organs within the body of a crayfish.
