DASIE is a model where students can develop their surgical and suturing skills without using animals. This new version of DASIE is made of a faux-suede outer skin with a layer that allows students to practise intradermal closure. The model has vessels for practising vascular ligation, a layer that represents the subcutaneous fat as well as an abdominal wall layer. Inside DASIE is a foam intestine where students can practise end-to-end anastomosis or incision and closure of a hollow organ. Can also be used as a model for practising aseptic technique.
Was introduced in the teaching laboratories at Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in the Autumn of 1991. Since 1992 the DASIE has been available to other schools. A new version DASIE is available from September 2009. The DASIE models are used for teaching basic medical and surgical skills in Veterinary Colleges, Veterinary Technician programs, commercial laboratories and human (MD) teaching hospitals. Please click here for the DASIE Instructional video film. Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) has introduced a range of alternative teaching aids, including artificial bones, flat-surface skin, palpation phantoms and resuscitation models (not for commercial use).
