Harvey The Cardiopulmonary Patient (5767)

Harvey, The Cardiopulmonary Patient is a life-size human mannikin that simulates nearly any cardiac disease. This virtual reality simulator gives the user the opportunity to study various cardiac conditions and practise bedside examination techniques under realistic conditions. By pressing a button the user can vary blood pressure, pulse, heart sounds, murmurs and breath sounds. Pulmonary auscultatory findings are simulated and appropriately matched to the cardiac disease being presented. The updated Harvey has a weight loss of 500 lbs (nearly 250 kilos) and includes additional disease states for a total of 30 cardiovascular conditions (two normal and 28 cardiovascular diseases). "Harvey" is driven by digitally pulses and impulses in 12 areas. He can "talk" via a built-in speaker, allowing history-taking. He also includes additional cardiac auscultatory areas for a total of 9, and addition of normal and abnormal breath sounds in 6 areas. The user is given the ability to modify the amplitude & intensity of all findings. Includes "Flashcard" software system to simplify upgrades. The simulations range from common to rare and complex conditions. "Harvey" provides a comprehensive cardiology curriculum by realistically simulating 30 conditions. It is structured to begin with common, less complex conditions and progress to more rare and complex diseases. The conditions are: Introductory Program; Normal; Innocent Murmur; Aortic Valve Sclerosis; Hypertension; Angina Pectoris; Acute Inferior Myocardial Infarction; Acute Anterior Myocardial Infarction; Ventricular Aneurysm; Mitral Valve Prolapse; Mitral Valve Prolapse, Isolated click & murmur; Mitral Regurgitation, chronic; Mitral Regurgitation, mild; Mitral Regurgitation, acute; Mitral Stenosis with severe tricuspid regurgitation; Mitral Stenosis with mild tricuspid regurgitation; Mitral Stenosis & Regurgitation; Aortic Regurgitation, chronic; Aortic Regurgitation, acute; Aortic Stenosis; Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy; Cardiomyopathy; Acute Pericarditis; Primary Pulmonary Hypertension; Atrial Septal Defect; Ventricular Septal Defect; Patent Ductus Arteriosus; Pulmonary Stenosis; Coarctation of the Aorta; Tetralogy of Fallot. The simulator starts with an Introductory Program.

Comments & References: Suitable for doctors, nurses and medical students to help them improve their diagnostic skills in the field of cardiac care. Suitable for Self-Learning with Harvey linked to UMedic; Instruction in small groups; and in lecture settings. The new "Harvey" is based on the oldest continuous university-based simulation project in medical education.
