Microsurgery on the Laboratory Rat, Volume 1: Permanent Cannulation of the Thoracic Duct

Description: Cannulation of a lymphatic vessel may be used in studies of immunology, pharmacokinetics and nutrition. Because of the delicate nature of the lymphatic vessels, and the problems caused by the formation of lymph clots, the most suitable place for the collection of lymph is the thoracic duct. In this technique, a purse-string suture is placed in the wall of the duct securing the silicon cannula. After this cannula is tunneled subcutaneously and fixed to the crown of the head, lymph can be collected while the animal is still freely moving in its cage. All details of the cannulation are shown in this video film, using three camera-positions (microscopic view, surgeon's view and total view). Computer animations are used.
