Description: This instructive video film clearly shows the double cannulation of the bile duct with intact enterohepatic circulation. It allows sampling of bile in a freely moving animal. The technique shown gives the opportunity to study for example the bilary excretion process, the effects of bile on intestinal absorption, and the pharmacokinetic properties of compounds that are cleared or metabolized by the liver and excreted into the bile. In combination with a permanent jugular vein cannula, the model enables excellent kinetic profiling of drugs and other substances, in the absence of anaesthetics. After a short introduction in the anatomy of the bile duct region, a computer animation illustrates how the cannulation should be performed. Then, using a three camera view, the videofilm shows how several ligatures are placed, small incisions are made in the bile duct and the cannulae inserted. Both cannulae are tunnelled subcutaneously to the head were they are attached to the scull. Finally, sampling of bile is shown in great detail.
