Description: Previously called Respsyst 3.0. Resp-Win is an interactive program which uses mathematical models to simulate various conditions that control oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions in the body. Resp-Win consists of 5 major sections which cover: Alveolar ventilation (determinants of alveolar PO2; PCO2); Diffusion; Haemoglobin saturation; Ventilation/Perfusion; and a Summary section that examines gas tensions in alveoli, arterial and venous blood. The initial four sections provide a tutorial and a simulation (mathematical model) which allow students to alter various parameters to obtain a better understanding of the dynamics of the respiratory system. The fifth section of the program includes 14 variables that determine the overall gas exchange and gas transport conditions in the body. Resp-Win can be used to simulate virtually any respiratory disease or experimental condition that affects gas exchange or transport. This program is used at several medical and dental schools as an active learning tool in a laboratory format. Sample laboratory exercises are provided with the program. All user input is by means of slide bars so that realistic values cannot be exceeded.
Comments & References: Menu-driven. System requirements: Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. Primarily designed as a review and reinforcement technique for a systemic, organ physiology course. Text is kept to a minimum and the emphasis is placed on graphics and simulations to provide for active participation by the user(s). Originally described in the Physiologist 28: 452-453, 1985. The program has been rewritten, using Visual Basic, to run under Windows. See also record numbers 694, 695, 696, 702, 721, 739, 803 and 4635 for the other 8 records in the Comp-Edu-Grams series.
