Description: UFAW is an internationally recognised scientific and educational charity concerned with the welfare of all animals. UFAW helps to improve the welfare of animals by promoting methods of meeting their physical and psychological needs. UFAW makes rational judgements based on the facts available and gives expert advice on how particular species should be managed and cared for. UFAW publishes books and pamphlets on good animal management, guidelines on refining experimental techniques to reduce the numbers of animals used and videos on enriching captive environments. UFAW also provides advisory information for legislators. UFAW holds annual symposia and occasional workshops; and maintains and supports a scientific research programme into many aspects of the biology and welfare of laboratory, farmed, companion, zoo and wild animals. UFAW also publishes an international journal ’Animal Welfare’ (see record 1793) which brings together the latest information on developments in the field of animal welfare science.
