CCAC Guidelines on: Euthanasia of Animals Used in Science

By Charbonneau, Ronald; Niel, Lee; Olfert, Ernest; von Keyserlingk, Marina and Griffin, Gilly (Editors)

This document aims to provide information for investigators, animal care committees (ACCs), facility managers, veterinarians and animal care staff that will assist in establishing and reviewing procedures for euthanasia of animals in their care. This guidelines document supersedes Chapter XII- Euthanasia, in Guide to the Care and Use of Experimental Animals, Vol. 1 (CCAC, 1993), which should no longer be used with regard to specific information about methods of euthanasia. The guidelines are developed by subcommittees of experts, based on available scientific evidence and expert opinion, and in response to needs identified within the scientific community, advances in laboratory animal care and procedures carried out on animals, and the needs of the CCAC Assessment Program. Table of Contents: Preface; 1 Summary of the guidelines listed in this document; 2 Introduction; 3 General guiding principles; 4 Overview of acceptable methods of euthanasia; 5 Conditionally acceptable methods; 6 Considerations relating to fetal and neonatal euthanasia; 7 Recommendations for research where scientific knowledge is lacking; 8 References; 9 Glossary.

36 pages. The guidelines document may be read online. The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) is the national peer review agency responsible for setting and maintaining standards for the ethical use and care of animals used in science throughout Canada.
