The EU chemicals legislation REACH requires information on chemical substances and their safety. Test methods are described in a test method regulation which closely follows the OECD test method guidelines. Registrants of chemical substances in REACH are expected to collect all information possible (e.g. from other substances, in vitro testing, epidemiological data) to avoid animal testing. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has produced Guidance on Information Requirements and Chemical Safety Assessment.
The development of alternative methods can be followed in the EU's tracking system TSAR.
