Description: Liver transplantation in the rat is a reliable and reproducible model for testing innovative liver preservation, resuscitation techniques and immunological studies. Arterialisation is essential for this model (Howden et al., 1989, Transplantation 47: 428-431). This audiovisual presentation describes each stage of the procedure: Donor operation. Graft preparation which includes placement of cuffs on portal vein and infrahepatic vena cava. Recipient preparation, including right nephrectomy and hepatectomy. Liver implantation, including end-to-end anastomosis of suprahepatic vena cava, restitution of portal circulation by reconstitution of portal vein and infrahepatic vena cava, reconstruction of bile duct, and restoration of hepatic arterial circulation by anastomosis of graft coeliac artery and recipient right renal artery. Closure of abdominal incision.
