Description: Technical instructions about the surgery and use of chronically cannulated blood vessels in rats. The advantages of this method are that experiments can be done on conscious unstressed animals, over a long period. This record deals with the cannulation of the portal vein, which is used for drug infusion and blood sampling. Beside the surgical instructions, the morphology of the portal vein and associated veins are shown. The procedure of blood sampling is demonstrated by a combination of live video-images and animation. Furthermore the maintenance of the cannula and several precautions are shown.
