A report from a Working Group, focusing on identifying causes of suffering within commonly used mouse and rat models of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), describing practical refinements to help reduce suffering and improve welfare without compromising the scientific objectives.

The report also discusses other relevant topics including identifying and minimising sources of variation within in vivo RA studies, the potential to provide pain relief, welfare assessment, humane endpoints, reporting standards and the potential to replace animals in RA research. The report contains a list of adverse effects with recommendations on how to reduce them, welfare assessment indicators (including grimace scales) and humane endpoints, a list of advantages and disadvantages of parenteral versus self-administration of analgesics, a score sheet for mice and key recommendations to help refine the use of mice and rats in RA research.
The 20-page report was published online in Inflammopharmacology, July 2015 (DOI 10.1007/s10787-015-0241-4) and may be downloaded here.
This work is part of a project initiated by the RSPCA which focuses on severe suffering in laboratory animals.
