The TARC force 3R Center is a spin-off of the Translational Animal Research Center (TARC) at the University Medical Centre of the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz, Germany.

The main aims of the TARC force 3R Center are:

  • to refine husbandry, routine procedures and animal experiments
  • to provide courses in animal training and animal-friendly handling
  • to develop 3D training models for the training of students, researchers and animal caretakers

The Centre is embedded in a University environment and is focused on basic research.

The research group at the Centre is currently working on refinement strategies for small laboratory animals. Clicker training is used to reduce stress and anxiety in rodents. Another focus of the group is to develop and implement animal-free teaching methods for the training of specific surgical techniques and for the training of animal caretakers.

The 3R Centre also provides advice and support to researchers regarding refinements and alternative methods.
