The invasive or harmful use of animals within scientific research, toxicity testing or for educational purposes, poses some of the greatest controversies with the animal studies field. Millions of animals are used for these purposes; however, their use is essential for human healthcare advancements and the training of future scientists and clinicians. Or so we are told. But is this really accurate? What are the true contributions of scientific and educational animal use, and what alternatives are available? This module explores the numbers, species and types of animals used for scientific and educational purposes internationally, and the impacts experienced by the animals used. The benefits for healthcare, educational or other purposes are critically scrutinised using the best available evidence. Design flaws commonly limiting the predictive value of animal experiments are explored, and best practice guidelines reviewed, along with 3Rs alternatives strategies for the Replacement, Reduction and Refinement of animal use. Harm-benefit analyses and regulatory developments are reviewed, as are recommendations for best practice relating to policy development in this field.
