The principal funding source of the organisation in 2016 was subscriptions from member organisations. UAR has more than 100 institutional members, most of whom pay an annual subscription. TProject funding was also received from organisations wishing to support UAR projects.
The UAR Education Team had a fantastic time at The Big Bang Fair at ExCel in London which ran from the 14th -17th March this year. With The British Pharmacological Society (BPS) kindly providing us with space on their stand, hundreds of children and young people were able to try their hand at learning to take a blood sample from our rubber rat model.
Visitors also had a chance to dress up in protective clothing worn when working with animals and discussed why it is important to wear it to protect the animals as well as the person. Those waiting their turn could occupy themselves looking at Perspex-set brains and hearts from several species of small animal.
The brilliant BPS education team ran activities on the effect of caffeine on Daphnia (water fleas), tablet making and the unusual origins of some drugs.
Over 65,000 people visited the fair over the four days, taking part in a huge range of activities with a diverse range of organisations from science and engineering backgrounds. Thursday and Friday were made up mainly of school groups, some of whom had travelled a very long way to get to the venue. The weekend attendees were mostly families with a very wide age range so we had some of our youngest ever participants!
The aim of the UAR and BPS activities was to create a memorable experience that would be remembered amidst the busyness of a day at the fair. One teacher was heard to say that the BPS stand featuring UAR was the best of the whole show and we hope that young people who visited the stand will be inspired by a potential future in developing new medicines and working with animals in research.
