Janette Carlsen graduated as a veterinarian from the Royal (Dick) Veterinary School in Edinburgh and from the Tierärztliche Fakultät in Munich. She took her doctoral degree in cognitive behaviour in rats at the Institute of Experimental Oncology and Therapeutic Research at the Technical University in Munich (TUM). She worked with research animals from 2002 to 2016 at various universities in Munich, both as a scientist, teacher and as the responsible person for animal welfare.

In 2013 she completed her specialist training in Laboratory Animal Science at Ludwig Maximillian University (LMU) in Munich. Afterwards, and until 2016, she was the animal welfare officer at the Institute for nuclear medicine at LMU. From 2014 to 2018 she was a member of the ethical commission in the Bavarian government.

Janette works to communicate respect for animals, and to point out how similar they are to humans. This respect will help to advance the vision of complete replacement of animal research.

She would like to see all scientific research published, whether the results are positive or not, in an international database. This would prevent the unnecessary use of animals in research and testing.
