Karianne Muri graduated as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Bristol in 1997. She has a Ph.D. in animal welfare in goats from the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science (2013). Since 2016 she has been a Diplomate in animal welfare science, ethics and law (Dip. ECAWBM-AWSEL).

Prior to starting work for her doctoral degree in 2007 she had a few years' experience in clinical practice, and worked for a short period for the Norwegian Animal Health Authority (Statens dyrehelsetilsyn), in the section for terrestrial animal health. After obtaining her doctoral degree she continued with research and teaching in animal welfare, as an Associate Professor in animal welfare and veterinary public health from 2020. Since May 2023 she has been employed as a Senior Researcher in animal welfare at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (80%), while continuing as an Associate Professor (20%) at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). From August 2025 her main place of work will be the Norwegian Society for Protection of Animals (Dyrebeskyttelsen Norge), but she will continue in her position at the University.

Her research has focussed on methods to assess animal welfare, in a range of different species. In addition she has had a special interest in human-animal relationships and factors that determine good husbandry for animals. She has lectured in animal welfare, state veterinary medicine, preventative medicine and research ethics.
