Please note: the Slice of Life Project was discontinued in 2007. The information below is therefore out of date:

Slice of Life VI is a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional shared disc of more than 38,500 still images covering all areas of medical education (medicine, nursing, dentistry and allied health education). The disc is a generic videodisc (i.e. the same images can be used in multiple ways). It has no specific purpose but can be repurposed as needed in various instructional programs. Side One is a visual encyclopedia of images drawn from various areas of medicine, dentistry and allied health education. Side Two contains physical medicine, surgery, and dentistry. At the University of Utah the disc is being used in, among other fields, histology, neuroanatomy, pathology, radiology, cardiology, neurosurgery, cytology, gross anatomy, ophthalmology, microbiology. Other areas also covered are embryology, laboratory medicine, haematology, immunology, and physical diagnosis. Side two (contributed by the Medical College of Georgia) contains 10 minutes of normal range of motion for all major joints, 7 minutes of gait sequences including a stroke patient, a below the knee amputee with prostheses, and a normal elderly person, three minute of cineangiography, and a five minute sequence of a Caesarian delivery. There are approximately 5000 still frames relating to dental education. The 12 inch videodisc can be played on any NTSC videodisc player and can be interfaced via an RS232 serial port with either IBM compatible computers or the Macintosh II or SE series. It is not available in the PAL or SECAM format for foreign users. The videodisc database is an index of more than 31,000 records (one for each image). The database structure includes fields which can be used to create special indices which permit the searcher to look by number, title, author, image type, organ or disease. Both the database and the videodisc are updated annually to permit programs to expand and new applications to be created. The database must be purchased separately. Cost to non-contributors: US$300.00 each ($150 for previous fullprice purchasers of Slice of Life III). The Slice of Life IV Videodisc Database is a 3 MB database index to the images on side one of the Slice of Life IV Videodisc. This database is in ASCII format or in Smart® format and will run on Macintosh as well as IBM compatible computers. The user must have his/her own database management program as well as a hard disc to run the Slice of Life IV Videodisc Database. The videodisc database is not available in hard copy. Price: US$100.00. The Slice of Life Laser Disc Index is a software program written at the University of Utah by Douglas Stringham, M.D. This program runs the Slice of Life IV Videodisc Database and controls a Pioneer 4200, 6000 or 6010A, Hitachi, or Sony videodisc player. When paired with the Smart® 3.1 Data Base Manager (from Informix, Inc.), the Slice of Life Laser Disc Index can search for title, author, organ, and disc number. The Smart® 3.1 Data Base Manager must be purchased separately either from Informix, Inc. (educational discounts are available through Campus Technology, P.O.Box 2909, Leesburg, VA 22075, 800-543-8188) or through a software dealer (approx. US$179.00). The Slice of Life Laser Disc Index and the Smart® 3.1 Data Base Manager run on any MS-DOS computer with a hard disc as well as on a Novell™ network. The Slice of Life Laser Disc Index will not run without the Smart® 3.1 Data Base Manager and the Slice of Life IV Videodisc Database in Smart® format. Cost: US$150.00. STAKAuthor 4.0 is a HyperCard stack with an authoring shell for users of Slice of Life IV. The database has been converted to HyperCard by Robert J. Bourdage, Ph.D. at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. Cost: US$150.00. Return Policy: Videodisc preview/demo copies are not available. However, videodiscs purchased may be returned for a refund of purchase price (less US$25.00 handling fee) if done so within 30 days of shipment. Returns of the Videodisc Database and/or Laser Disc Index will not be accepted.
