CardioLab Version 3.0 simulated in vivo cardiovascular pharmacology experiments. CardioLab could be used repeatedly to simulate chart recorder outputs of experiments on anaesthetised (normal or reserpinised) animals and pithed animals. The simulated heart rate and blood pressure traces appeared on screen and could be printed out. CardioLab allowed administration of the following 10 drugs of Agonists: Norepinephrine (Noradrenaline); Angiotensin; Vasopressin; DMPP; Epinephrine (Adrenaline); Tyramine; Phenylephrine; B-HT 920; Isoproterenol (Isoprenaline) and Acetylcholine. In addition it allowed administration of the following 12 drugs of Antagonists: Hexamethonium; Propranolol; Prazosin; Atropine; Mepyramine; Ranitidine; Yohimbine; Atenolol; Nifedipine; Phenoxybenzamine; Cocaine and Neostigmine. CardioLab could also mimic stimulation of vagal and sympathetic cardiac nerves. The effects of blockers (antagonists) "wear off" at a rate corresponding to their t1/2. Overdoses with agonists or blockers "killed" the preparation. Responses were subject to "biological variation" and were influenced by cardiac compensatory reflexes if appropriate. Tachyphylaxis was seen with relevant agonists. CardioLab even simulated the slow deterioration of a preparation which may "die" unexpectedly after six hours of "preparation time" (responses appeared instantaneously but represented about 3 minutes of "preparation time"). CardioLab could provide "unknown" drugs for characterisation by students.
