Description: Cardiovascular Programs consists of three separate programs accessible from a menu: CAPEXCH, FLOW, and EVENTS. a) CAPEXCH is a short program covering the factors involved in the Starling Hypothesis which determine the filtration and reabsorption of water through the capillary endothelium. Arterial pressure, pre/post capillary resistance, and capillary permeability can be altered to observe the equilibrium pressure in the capillary. b) FLOW is another short program that allows students to investigate the relationships between arterial and venous pressures, flow and resistance in a parallel circuit. The circuit consists of four channels each with a variable resistance. Arterial and venous pressures can also be adjusted and the dependent variable is the flow rate which is determined by the arterial-venous pressure difference and the total resistance. c) EVENTS (of the Cardiac Cycle). The cardiac cycle is described in 8 separate intervals and the major events occurring in each interval are depicted graphically using traces of the heart sounds, aortic, atrial and ventricular pressures, ventricular volume and ECG. The major part of this program is the question and answer seqment which randomly presents 60 questions along with 1 or 2 of the above traces. Wrong answers lead to a review of the particular topic and the score is kept so students can evaluate their understanding of cardiac events.
Comments & References: Menu-driven. Primarily designed as a review and reinforcement technique for a systemic, organ physiology course. Text is kept to a minimum and the emphasis is placed on graphics and simulations to provide for active participation by the user(s). See record numbers 141, 695, 696, 702, 721, 739, 803 and 4635 for the other 8 records in the Comp-Edu-Grams series.
