Farm Animal Worker Training Program and Electronic Version of Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching

Description: Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS) has created a package to accompany the first revised edition of the "Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching" (Ag Guide), which was published in 1999.   The package is being marketed as the Farm Animal Worker Training Program and Electronic Version of Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching.   The package includes: Introductory Module: two VHS video films, a copy of the Ag Guide, a CD-ROM of the Ag Guide and a set of examination questions; Swine Training, Level 1 Module: VHS video and CD-ROM, space and temperature charts, Pig Overview PowerPoint presentation, National Pork Board video, "Swine Handling for Pork Producers", certificate of completion, 4-colour publication of 40 slides with sample test questions, and a hard copy and CD-ROM version of the Ag Guide; Beef Cattle Training, Level 1 Module: VHS video and CD-ROM, Beef Cattle Training PowerPoint presentation, certificate of completion, National Institute for Animal Agriculture video, "Cattle Handling & Transportation", 4-colour publication of more than 60 slides with sample test questions, and a hard copy and CD-ROM version of the Ag Guide; Dairy Cattle Training, Level 1 Module: VHS video and CD-ROM; Dairy Cattle Training PowerPoint presentation, certificate of completion, National Institute for Animal Agriculture video, "Understanding Dairy Cattle Behavior to Improve Handling and Transportation", 4-colour publication of more than 80 slides with sample test questions, and a hard copy and CD-ROM version of the Ag Guide; Horse Training, Level 1 Module: VHS video and CD-ROM, Horse Training PowerPoint presentation, certificate of completion, 4-color publication of more than 40 slides with sample test questions, and a hard copy and CD-ROM version of the Ag Guide.   The comprehensive program teaches basic husbandry procedures along with information on the IACUC and the Animal Welfare Act.   Some of the approaches may be applicable to the European system as well.   The program will be promoted to agricultural animal users in research and teaching universities, government laboratories, and industry.   Certification exams will be scheduled by ARPAS.   The Ag Guide is recognized by AAALAC as an official "Reference Resource" and is used as a standard of quality animal care in its evaluations of animals in agricultural settings.   Standards, such as the Ag Guide, developed by the scientific community, are invaluable aids to Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) in its mission to promote scientific validity and ensure animal well-being. Please see http://www.fass.org for the Table of Contents of the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching, Third Edition, published in 2010.
