Genetic modification of the gametes or the embryo results in the production of stable genetically modified organisms where the new genes are passed on to the next generation. The method is used on zebrafish to study gene function and is also used in breeding programmes. Genetic modification of somatic tissue is used to develop DNA vaccines and in gene therapy using naked DNA, where the modifications are not inherited.
