The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the largest animal protection organisation within the United States and it was founded in 1954 to promote the humane treatment of animals and to foster respect, understanding and compassion for all animals. The HSUS message of care and protection of today embraces not only the animal kingdom, but also the Earth and its environment. To achieve the goals, the HSUS works through legislation, litigation, investigation, education, advocacy and fieldwork. The HSUS's efforts in the United States are facilitated by their regional offices. The HSUS is not affiliated with any local animal shelters or humane organisations. The HSUS is a mainstream voice for animals, with active programs in companion animals and equine protection, wildlife and habitat protection, animals in research, and farm animal welfare. The HSUS has offices throughout the United States and partners, including Humane Society International (HSI) throughout the world.
