Intravenous Injection in the Rat video

This video film demonstrates how to administer an intravenous injection using the tail vein in a live rat. Administration of an intravenous injection can be difficult. A restraining device is often required. The film demonstrates good practice in how to pick up the animal from a cage; how to place it in the restraining device; how to prepare the tail vein for injection; and how to choose and apply the needle used. The video also explains why it is important to use a restraining device of the correct size. Too small a device can result in injuries and can interfere with respiratory movements. Too large a device can also result in injury, caused by movements during restraint. It is important to clean the device thoroughly after use to avoid pheromonally-induced stress or cross-infection. The video includes a commentary.
