This is artificial skin in a holder, where the students can practise knot tying and suture patterns. Teachers instruct 15-18 students at a time for 20 minutes.

Materials:

  • Wound bandage (e.g. Allevyn), 4mm cut into pieces 12 x 9 cm
  • Holders

Set up:

  • Place the Allevyn in the holders
  • Instruct and evaluate
  • The next group is given new polyurethane sheets

The following supplies should be available at the work station:

  • Needle holder
  • Forceps
  • Scissors
  • Scalpel
  • Suture
  • Needles

Student instructions:
Perform the following sutures :

  • Simple interrupted suture in skin
  • Continuous suture in skin
  • Continuous subcutaneous suture - bury the knots
  • Intradermal suture continuous in skin - bury the knots
  • Inverting suture
    • Cushing 
    • Lembert
  • Tension-relieving suture
    • Horizontal mattress
    • Vertical mattress
