The Great American Bullfrog

This detailed vinyl plastic replica of a sexually mature female bullfrog, Rana catesbeiana, includes details such as internal nares, vomerine teeth, eustachian tube and nictitating membrane of the eye, students can develop a clear generalisation of what they have found while dissecting their own specimen. Features a highly detailed, three-chambered heart of an amphibian - the only frog model with a detachable heart which divides into anterior and posterior halves to display the interior of its chambers and major vessels. Heart chambers and blood vessels throughout the body are colour-coded to augment understanding of the circulation of the blood. Fully dissected, the ventral aspect exposes all the viscera, spread for maximum visibility, the buccal cavity, and the musculature of the right hind leg. The right half of the mandible with its muscular floor, tongue, and glottis, remove as a unit for detailed study. Strategic cutaways of internal organs reveal the bronchi of the lung, stomach rugae, and the lumen of the large intestine. Multi-level dissections of the dorsal aspect expose the right half of the brain and nervous system, the eye and optic nerve, and the ear with a cutaway through the tympanic membrane to expose the columella and eustachian tube. (The pharyngeal entrance of the eustachian tube is visible in the buccal cavity). Also depicted are the skin with its life-like pigmentation pattern, external eye complete with nictitating membrane, and the musculature of the right hind leg. A deeper dissection of the left half of the body exposes all the bones of the skull and skeleton, including those of the limbs, fingers and toes. Presents ten organ systems: Integumentary (skin); Nervous and sense organs; Skeletal; Muscular; Circulatory; Respiratory; Digestive; Urinary; Endocrine; and Reproductive. Standing upright on a rectangular hardwood base, the non-breakable model is removable for hands-on examination. More than 175 anatomical features are hand numbered on the model, and identified in the accompanying Key, which also includes a supplementary illustration of the male reproductive system.
