The IKEA cardiac puncture mouse model is a spin-off from the Cardiac Balloons model made by Wendy Williams at Cornell University. It can be used for training students, researchers and technicians who need to perform cardiac puncture in mice.
Instructions:
- Use a normal IKEA mouse toy, small balloons and fake blood.
- Open the back of the toy using scissors.
- Take 2 balloons and 1 mL of blood.
- Make a knot on one of the balloons, making sure it has no air inside. Insert the blood. This red balloon will simulate the heart.
- Place this balloon inside the other balloon using a pair of large forceps. The blue balloon will simulate the pericardium.
- Place the balloons within the cotton inside the IKEA mouse. Correct positioning is important, but remember that the heart lies more dorsally than normal when the animal is placed in dorsal recumbency. Close the back of the mouse using sutures or staples.
- Place the mouse in dorsal recumbency. The IKEA cardiac puncture mouse model is now ready to use.
