The aim of the 3R Foundation was to promote alternative research methods to animal experimentation through grants for research projects as well as to implement and promote the 3R principles.

The 3R Foundation was a cooperative institution set up in 1987 by the Parliamentary Group for Animal Experimentation Questions (public organ), Interpharma (Actelion Ltd, Merck Serono Ltd, Novartis Pharma Ltd, F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, and the associated members Bayer (Switzerland) Ltd, Cilag Ltd and Vifor Ltd) and the Foundation for Animalfree Research (animal protection). The organisation was supervised by the Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs.

The Foundation has now been disbanded after 30 years' work and has been replaced by the 3RCC (Swiss 3Rs Competence Center).

The Foundation's website still contains extensive information on 3R's methods and links to the results of 138 projects funded by the organization since 1987. The 3R Bulletins provided additional information on 3R methods developed under funding from the Foundation. Information is available in German, French, and English.
