This site developed by Dr. Michael Festing, a UK scientist and statistician, provided an interactive short course on experimental design for research scientists working with laboratory animals. The aim was to reduce the number of animals which are used, improve the quality of the science and save time, money and other scientific resources.
The course was divided into sections covering:
- Ethics and problems
- Experiments and strategy
- Experimental units
- Good experiments
- Avoiding bias
- Power and sample size
- Controlling variability
- Strains of rats and mice
- Experimental design
- Factorial experiments
- Regression, correlation, survival
- Statistical analysis
- Presenting your results
- Guidelines and reviews
- Self-test
- Literature
This website has now been closed down, but may be replaced eventually by a new site.
Michael Festing has a complementary website, Isogenic Info, which provides detailed information on the use of isogenic strains (inbred strains and F1-hybrids), including a section on the design of animal experiments.
