Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC)

The Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC) is mandated by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) to provide information for improved animal care and use in research, testing, and teaching. AWIC is a unit of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

AWIC is an information center with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, located within the National Agricultural Library in Beltsville, Maryland.

AWIC is mandated by the US Animal Welfare Act (AWA) to provide information for improved animal care and use in research, testing, and teaching.

AWIC answers questions from the public or scientists about animal welfare laws, the 3Rs, animal care and welfare, responding within five business days. They also offer live chat with AWIC or another NAL employees, and they maintain a website of relevant resources. This includes the ability to receive automatic updates when an article of interest is published, by setting up search alerts. AWIC has developed an instruction guide for setting up search alerts in PubMed.

AWIC offers so-called search hedges (pre-made, standardised search strings) for specific topics. In collaboration with the National Toxicology Program it has also produced search hedges on non-animal models in toxicology.

In addition, AWIC provides general advice on literature searching, and offers to conduct literature searches on alternatives free of charge.
