Following the advent of the atomic age, many nations investigated the effects of radioactive exposure in animal models. Some of these investigations involved costly and unique experiments that produced tissue and data archives which are unlikely to be reproduced. In an effort to extract the value from these collections, programs have started in Japan, Europe, and America to preserve and make public the data and tissues from these studies for further investigation.
Data and tissue from 4709 dogs are available. The service is free but those requesting tissues will pay for shipping only.
The following data is available for each animal:
- pedigree of each dog
- age at radiation exposure
- radiation exposure
- organ systems studied
- tissue samples collected
- clinical observations
- pathology observations
- surgical history
- treatment history
The database can be searched by:
- experiment type (e.g. hematological changes, life span, etc.)
- dose rate, exposure time, total dose
- dogs exposed in utero
- acute and fractionated doses
- control animals
More information and database access is available here.
A similar database and tissue archive for irradiated mice is available here.
The archive is provided through Northwestern University, NASA, and the U.S. Department of Energy.
