Description: | This course will provide knowledge about pain physiology, pain evaluation and treatment, handling of acute and chronic pain in practice together with knowledge about anesthesia, anesthetic equipment and observation of animals under anesthesia. Furthermore the course contains demonstrations of the equipment, videos of procedures and teaches the participants how to make and fill out anesthetic protocols. The course is split into a day with theoretical teaching and a day of practical exercises. |

Day Agenda Tuesday 22 May or 28 August: Theoretical lectures at Copenhagen Zoo. 09:00-12:00 Pain physiology, assessment and alleviation. 13:0-17:00 Anesthesia - physiology, drugs and practical approaches. 17:00-21:30 Social event: Guided tour in Copenhagen Zoo with close contact to some of the animals - could be a giraffe or a hippo! Followed by a barbecue at the Zoo. Day Agenda Wednesday 23 May or 29 August: Practical workshop at Panum, University of Copenhagen. 09:00 - 17:00 Anesthesia protocols and focus on what is suitable for surgery in combination with endocrinology and physiology. Participants are divided in 3 teams rotating between 3 animal species: • Introduction to mouse anesthesia in practice: IV access, monitoring and intubation. • Introduction to rat anesthesia in practice: IV access, monitoring and intubation. • Introduction to rabbit anesthesia in practice: IV & IA access, monitoring (invasive BP) and intubation/laryngeal mask. • Demonstration of selected procedures: Induction chamber, mask induction, second gas induction, ventilation |
